BIKE RIDES EXTRAORDINAIRE,

brought to you by your cranking impresario, GEOFFREY PIERCE.

HEY. IT'S 2006. I'M BACK.

I made a run at a 100 mile running race, the Kansas Heartland 100, but came up a big DNF.

It's time to get back to the bike. I'm thinking that both the Crank (5-19-07) and the AGNG (8-4-07) will be back for 2007. And I'm thinking again about that El Paso to Port Arthur in six days thang too.

One of these days I'll get around to cleaning up this site, too.

Pay attention, or it'll pass you right by.

2005!

AUGUST RIDE CANCELED - SEE BELOW

This year's rides:

CRANK 200: Saturday, May 21, 2005, 5:00 am.

This delightful jaunt starts at Belin Park, just east of Richmond, and makes a big circle through the rural beauty of Fort Bend, Brazoria, Matagorda and Wharton Counties, for a total of 212 miles.

The course will be the same as last year, except in reverse, so we'll be going through the most congested parts in the quiet of early morning. See the page links for this year's turn sheet.

I drove the course a few weeks ago, and all the roads and all the dogs are still there. See you in a few weeks.

LOOK OUT - NEW STUFF HERE

We have two new, manned rest stops provided by the intrepid Joe King. Look on the turn sheet at mile 63.5 and at mile 159.2 in Glen Flora.

But wait, there's more. If you want to ride 95 miles, Joe will drive you and your bike (up to 4 bikes) from Glen Flora over to his rest stop at mile 63. You ride from there with the other riders to Glen Flora, mile 159, and there is your car, ready to drive you home. Just have your bike on the back of Joe's car when he leaves Glen Flora at 7:30 am. How's that? To get to Glen Flora you would drive down 59, then west on 102 just a few miles. If anyone wants to take Joe up on this idea, send me an email (see the link below) and I will forward it to Joe.

That's Joe. What a guy!

ALL GUTS, NO GLORY: Saturday, August 6, 2005, 4:00 am.

SORRY - CANCELLATION

With sincere apologies, because of personal conflicts which have arisen, I must abdicate from this year's ALL GUTS, NO GLORY. And I also apologize for posting this notice so late.

If I get wind of anyone's intention to carry on in my absence, I will post it here.

Thanks, and good luck and good riding.

To paraphrase Pedro Martinez, this one is your daddy - 240 miles through Harris, Liberty, Chambers, Galveston and Brazoria Counties.

This year's rides will be the third Crank and the seventh AGNG. It's all Texas Gulf Coast, flat, hot and heavenly. If you bring a friend in a car to crew for us, then it will be tailwinds all the way.

OUR HISTORY

In 1999, I thought to myself, "Gee, whiz, wouldn't it be fun to do a double century in August!" Those notable road warriors, Mike and Bill, thought so, too. On the first Sunday in August, we rode just over 200 miles. That was the first ALL GUTS, NO GLORY Gulf Coast Double Century. Each year a (fool)hardy group of a dozen or so riders has come out for the festive 4:00 a.m. start. We ride on Saturday so we can moan on Sunday.

Some called August too hot and 240 too far. Hence the Crank 200, in temperate May and a relaxing 212 miles.

The rides are free, non-organized events. There is no registration; you show up, and you ride. It is helpful to get warning by email of your intention to ride. For support, we depend on the assistance of our generous friends, with their cars and bike racks. If you don't want to ride, volunteer to drive crew and see some awesome bike riding. Grateful riders will give you sweaty, stinky hugs that you won't forget.

CRANK 200 - AT THE START
the-riders-when-they-still-smelled-ok.jpg
The riders when they still smelled OK.

People send me emails asking, "Will there be people going my speed?" Well, gee, I don't know. Most people ride in groups most of the time.

No one will be abandoned out there in Matagorda or Chambers County. If you run out of tubes or break a nail or start to halucinate, we'll get you home somehow.

So come on out and ride.

I will be keeping this site up to date with new information as I get it (or make it up). You can email me with questions if you want, and I will be as prompt as possible with my reply.

If anyone can tell me how to change the order of the pages within the site, I'd appreciate it. (HTML stands for "how to make lousy".)

IN CASE YOU WONDERED

Yes, these are one-day rides.

The turn sheets are from last year, but will be updated as necessary shortly before each ride. The routes will be mostly the same this year, although I'll survey beforehand for nasty construction or other possible problems. Look at the links above for other info about the rides and for driving directions to the starts.

See you on the road.

RIDERS AND DRIVERS

So please email me if you're thinking about coming out, whether as rider or driver.  The more info we have in advance, the better the ride.

And if you want to ride, you can really contribute to the success of the ride if you bring a riding buddy AND a driver.  Everyone will love you, and you'll have a great ride.

Questions or comments? Sending me money?
